Key Active Ingredients

Purple Colour (Violet Pigment) — specifically calibrated to neutralise yellow and brassy tones in grey, white and palomino coats. The violet pigment works on the same colour wheel principle as purple shampoo for human hair — it counteracts warm yellow tones to restore a bright, clean white. The concentration is precisely balanced to tone without leaving any purple residue when rinsed properly.

Lemon Eucalyptus Oil — a dual-purpose ingredient. As well as contributing to the bar's fresh, clean scent, lemon eucalyptus is a well-documented natural insect deterrent, making this shampoo doubly useful during fly and midge season.

Neem Oil — Ayurvedic insect deterrent with additional antibacterial and antifungal properties. Helps maintain a healthy skin environment under the coat, particularly useful for horses prone to mud fever or skin irritation.

Oat Protein — conditions and strengthens the coat, adding body and volume. Particularly beneficial for fine or flat coats that lack natural lustre. Also has skin-soothing properties that help calm minor irritation.

DL Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5) — penetrates the hair shaft to moisturise from within, adding shine and improving coat manageability. Reduces static and brittleness, particularly in dry or winter coats.

Odour Neutraliser — actively eliminates stable, sweat and environmental odours rather than masking them with fragrance. Leaves the coat smelling clean rather than heavily perfumed.

Sweet Almond Oil — lightweight emollient that moisturises the skin without leaving a greasy residue on the coat. Contributes to the bar's smooth, gliding application.

Mild Anionic Surfactants (vegetable-derived) — biodegradable, gentle cleansing agents that lift dirt, grease and staining without stripping the coat's natural oils or irritating sensitive skin.

Stearic Acid (vegetable-derived) — gives the bar its firm, long-lasting solid form. Acts as a secondary emollient and helps the bar glide smoothly over the coat.

Q: Will the purple colour stain my horse's coat or leave purple residue?

A: No — this is the question we get asked most and the answer is definitively no, provided you rinse thoroughly. The violet pigment concentration is carefully calibrated to tone and neutralise yellow without depositing visible colour on the coat. If you rinse completely, no purple residue remains. The only situation where toning can occur is if the bar is left on an extremely porous or bleached white coat for an extended period without rinsing — normal use on a horse coat will not cause this.

Q: How does purple shampoo actually whiten a horse's coat?

A: It works on colour theory rather than bleaching. Grey, white and palomino coats often develop a yellow or brassy tint from grass staining, UV exposure, sweat and general stable dirt. Violet sits directly opposite yellow on the colour wheel, which means the two colours cancel each other out when combined. The result is a visually brighter, whiter coat — achieved without any bleach or harsh chemicals.

Q: Is it safe to use on a horse's mane, tail and legs as well as the body?

A: Yes — it works particularly well on manes, tails and white leg markings where yellowing and staining tend to be most visible. Many customers use it specifically on legs and tails before shows and competitions. Apply in sections, work into a lather, then rinse thoroughly.

Q: How is this different from using human purple shampoo on a horse?

A: Human purple shampoos are formulated for the pH of human hair and scalp (around 4.5–5.5). Horse skin has a different pH (around 7.0–7.4) and horse coat structure is significantly coarser than human hair. Using human purple shampoo on a horse risks skin irritation, coat dryness and poor results. This bar is specifically formulated for equine skin pH and coat texture, giving better toning results with no risk of irritation.

Q: Does it also work as a fly and insect deterrent?

A: Yes — lemon eucalyptus and neem oil, both well-documented natural insect deterrents, are active ingredients in this bar. It won't replace a dedicated fly repellent for prolonged turnout, but it provides a useful base level of insect deterrence during and after washing, particularly useful during the summer grooming season. Q: How often should I use it?

A: For show preparation, use it as the final wash 24–48 hours before competition to allow the coat to settle and natural oils to partially restore. For everyday use, it can be used at every bath — the formula is gentle enough for regular washing without drying out the coat. For horses that yellow quickly, weekly use during the summer season is perfectly safe.

Q: Can I use it on a dark or bay horse?

A: We don't recommend it for dark coats — the violet pigment is designed to work on light-coloured coats (white, grey, palomino, cremello, dapple grey, spotted) and will have no visible benefit on dark coats. For dark horses, a standard deep cleaning shampoo would be more appropriate.

Q: Which size should I choose?

A: The Standard 70g tin is ideal for first-time buyers or for targeted use on legs, manes and tails. The Large 110g bar is better value for whole-body washing or for yards with multiple grey or white horses. The refill options are the most eco-friendly and cost-effective choice for returning customers who already have a tin.

Q: Is it safe for horses competing under FEI or British Equestrian rules?
