Clove oil is rubefacient (warming and soothing) increasing blood flow and making the skin feel warmer, so is often used to relieve muscle spasms and arthritic joint pain.

It also contains Eugenol which has natural anaesthetic and antiseptic properties and commonly used for this purpose in dentistry.

Peppermint oil is analgesic (acts to relieve pain) including for headaches, muscle aches and inflammation with both cooling and calming effects when applied on the skin.

Eucalyptus oil is not only an excellent decongestant (also found in our Breathe Easy Balms here) but also contains several constituents including 1, 8-Cineole, Citrenellol, Sabinene, Camphene and Limonene that have anti-inflammatory and warming properties that help relieve muscle spasms.

Wintergreen oil has an anaesthetic effect that temporarily numbs painful areas whilst simultaneously adding to the sensation of warmth, useful in the treatment of arthritis, rheumatism, gout and joint pain.

It comfortingly revitalises exhausted and tender muscles, soothes headaches and psoriasis symptoms, as well as pain and discomfort in the lower back, nerves, joints and ovaries.

Lavender oil is not only a natural sedative for these long, light nights, acting as a sleep aid for those suffering from insomnia but is also said to be calming and both physically and emotionally balancing.

It is also reputed to reduce stress by relaxing the brain waves which in turn reduces cortisol levels that contribute to the stress hormone and can lead to lower immunity.  It is also anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic.

Arnica herbs are commonly used in the treatment of arthralgia (joint aches) and myalgia (muscle soreness). It is said to reduce pain and improve joint function as well as reducing bruising and swelling.  We infuse the herb into locally sourced Oxfordshire Rapeseed oil low in saturated fat, high in Vitamin E along with additional herbs of Comfrey and Dandelion.

Clinical trials have substantiated the efficacy of Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) in the topical treatment of pain, inflammation and swelling of muscles and joints in degenerative arthritis, acute myalgia in the back, strains and sprains from sports injuries and accidents.

The inclusion of Dandelion oil can ease muscle tension, as well as cold and stiff joints when applied topically on the skin. It can aid in the removal of uric acid from the body and therefore help with rheumatism, arthritis and other connective tissue conditions when toxicity needs to be moved. The bitter flavonoids in dandelion relieve muscle spasms and reduce inflammation.

Tamanu oil, a plant oil derived from the Tamanu (‘Calophyllum inphyllum’) tree which is native to Southeast Asia and Polynesia.   It has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties and has long been used in the Vanuatu Pacific islands for the treatment of eczema and Psoriasis and in Fiji for the treatment of arthritis.

The ricinoleic acid found in Castor oil deeply penetrates the skin, fighting bacteria whilst softening and re-hydrating irritated skin.

Almond oil can help facilitate muscle relaxation as well as soothing dry skin, improving complexion and skin tone.

All these natural constituents combined work together to make a powerful and wonderfully beneficial muscle ease balm. After use and relief a good night's sleep should be in store.
