OK, first of all and to clarify, no offence to the East Coast rapper (Parrish Mic Doc) who went by the same monicker but, here we are referring to ‘PMD’ (p-menthane-3, 8-diol).
PMD is a botanical component that contains strong pesticidal properties. It has proved to be far more effective than Citronella Oil and, also offers an excellent and effective alternative to other bug repellents on the market, such as those containing deet; a fact fully endorsed by the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health.
It is often, incorrectly, referred to as ‘Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE)’, but PMD is only one of OLE's isolated ingredients. It is part of the waste material of the oil’s distillation process obtained from the twigs and leaves of the ‘lemon scented gum tree’ (Corymbia citriodora).
OLE has been researched and used commercially in China for more than fifty years. When the US started to study these Chinese repellents in the 1990’s, they identified PMD as the prime active repellent ingredient.
In 2000, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) listed ‘PMD/Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus’ as a ‘bio-pesticide repellent’ meaning it is derived from natural materials. Products containing PMD can be applied to skin and clothing for the purpose of repelling mosquitoes, noseeums, biting flies and gnats.
In 2005, The Centers For Disease Control And Prevention (CDC) added PMD to their approved list. To this day, however, it is still not a widely-known nor proclaimed as a wonderfully effective ingredient in bug repellents in either the USA or Europe!
So, let's be perfectly clear here. We're not saying one product is better than another - we're not being dogmatic and saying you must do this or you must do that. What we are saying is that there are repellent choices out there that are equally effective to 'mainstream' products. Choices out there that many people are wholly unaware of. So isn't it best to make the right choice for you and your family from an informed position? That's right where this article comes in - to inform and give you the power to make the best decision for you and yours - to choose the door with the best outcome if you will!
Additionally, there is much confusion surrounding ‘Lemon Eucalyptus Essential Oil’, which primarily consists of Citronellal (and only trace elements of PMD, of around 2%) and is not approved by the EPA or CDC, as opposed to ‘Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus’, a refined version of the essential oil, whereby the main Citronellal ingredient has been turned into at least 64% PMD (using a process that imitates the natural conversion that occurs in the leaves of the Lemon Eucalyptus tree). So, yes, it can be as confusing as working out which way to turn in a maze.
Studies have shown PMD has long lasting effectiveness when tested against more than a dozen species of mosquitoes, including both Aedis and Anopheles species of mosquito such as the Aedis agyptii (yellow fever mosquito) and the Anopheles albimanus (new world malaria mosquito), as well as the noseeum biting midge (Culicoides variipennis Coquillet), the deer tick (Ixodes ricinis L.) and the stable fly (Stomoxys calcitrans L.).
In light of all this available information we have determined that it is possible to create a natural, safe and effective 100% vegan repellent as a viable alternative to deet-based products.
As such we have produced our Awesome Bug Repellent barswhich:
